Open Garden Celebrations
#teamqueenscourt was once again delighted to invite
members of the wider community to attend our Open
Garden Event on Saturday 5th July.
This highly popular annual event takes place within our
beautiful gardens which are lovingly tended to by our team
of wonderful Volunteers.
The event saw a fantastic array of activities for all ages.
Children enjoyed games and competitions, including classics
such as Hook-a-Duck, Skittles, and a fun twist on ‘Pin the Tail on
the Donkey’ and ‘Crown Queenie’!
We also had a large plant stall, o昀昀ering a variety of plants,
herbs, and garden paraphernalia.
(2024/25)
Visitors also enjoyed delicious homemade cakes, with two
dedicated stalls: one serving refreshments on-site and another
for those who wanted to take home cakes, pastries, and biscuits.
Birkdale Support Group
This group set out on its Queenscourt Hospice journey
before the hospice even opened, and we have been raising
thousands of pounds for this worthy cause ever since. In
those days there was very little 昀椀nancial support from o昀케cial
bodies for hospices, so volunteers were much needed.
As Queenscourt opened, more Support Groups were formed,
and we had meetings regularly with representatives from each
group . Over the years , for various reasons, one by one they have
disbanded, and we are now the last remaining o昀케cial Support
Group which still exists to raise money for Queenscourt. The
inspiration over the years has been Dr. Karen Groves, now retired,
who supported and encouraged us always in our e昀昀orts.
We have never been a large group, and our meetings
regularly take place in our own homes with the host providing
refreshments! Doreen Palmer (was Richards), who started
Birkdale Support Group, (persuaded by Ray Je昀昀s), is still a
member from the earliest days, as am I. During the intervening
years we have had a number of members - too many to mention who have all worked hard and given much to our hospice. We are
still raising money and recently held a most interesting afternoon
10
entitled “A Slice of Life” involving a well-known Flower Arranger.
We also had an excellent concert by Phil Shotton and his Band.
The variety of events we have presented over the years is endless,
from the usual Co昀昀ee Mornings and Fashion Shows to lunches
with eminent speakers and learning what to grow in our gardens,
plus all the seasonal entertainments!
We are now a group of seven but ,sadly, most of us are of an
age where one or other of us is in hospital or house-bound,
but still contribute.
We send good wishes to
members Barbara Galvin and Philip
Milloy-Robinson, who are both poorly.
Our next Band Concert with Phil Shotton
is on Sunday 17th May 2026,at The Little
Theatre in Southport. We warmly invite
you to attend this, and all of our events.
Thank you,
Margaret Mann
(Chairman, Queenscourt Birkdale Support Group)
